RHS Plants for Pollinators

Salvia 'Mystic Spires' ('Balsalmisp')

This is an excellent improvement on Salvia 'Indigo Spires'. It's just as long-flowering, with tall spires of dark blue-purple blooms produced in abundance throughout the summer and autumn, but far more compact and bushy, requiring less dead heading to encourage successive flowering. It is very heat and drought tolerant, but wet soils must be avoided over winter.

Plant Care

Keep well watered until firmly established. Plant into free draining garden soil, avoiding wet areas. In exposed gardens, lift and store in a bright, frost free position over winter, or take cuttings.

Height/Width

Water thoroughly, or stand pot in a container of water for half an hour before planting. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Remove the pot, place the plant in the hole so that the root ball is level with the surrounding ground and refill, firming if necessary. Keep well watered in dry weather. Feed in spring with a good, general fertiliser.
